How the Pelton wheel experiment is done
A Pelton wheel is an impulse turbine: the available head is turned into velocity in the nozzle, and the free jet strikes split buckets on the runner at atmospheric pressure. The spear inside the nozzle changes the jet area and so the flow. Pelton wheels suit high heads and low flows, which is why these rigs work at supply heads of 25 to 45 m.
Input power is rho x g x Q x H, from the discharge and the head on the inlet gauge. Brake power comes from the rope brake: P = 2 x pi x N x T / 60, where T is the net rope load times the effective drum radius. Their ratio is the overall efficiency, and plotting it against speed and load gives the main and operating characteristic curves.
- Fill the sump tank and start the circulation pump from the star-delta starter.
- Set the spear to the chosen opening and note the supply head on the inlet pressure gauge.
- Load the runner in steps on the rope brake dynamometer and record the speed at each load.
- Read the discharge from the Pitot tube manometer for each setting.
- Repeat for other spear openings and plot output power and efficiency against speed.
