What the instruments are used for

The colorimeter measures how much light a coloured solution absorbs, so students can plot absorbance against concentration and find the concentration of an unknown sample; its kinetic mode records readings continuously, which suits rate-of-reaction experiments. The three melting point apparatus, used with the capillary tubes, find the melting point of a solid to help identify it and judge its purity.

The mini gas bottles are resealable, non-refillable bottles of compressed gas whose control valve can be removed and moved between bottles of different gases. The regulators control the flow from larger canisters, and the helium cylinders and balloon regulator are used to fill balloons for demonstrations. The shade 9 welding filter lens is for safe viewing of burning magnesium and similar bright reactions, and the periodic table chart hangs on the laboratory wall for reference.

The Colorimeter (EL-CLE-10974) reads in absorbance units from -0.3 to 1.99 or in percent transmission from 0 to 199 over a 400 to 700 nm range. Its integral wheel holds 8 filters from 440 to 700 nm with a 40 nm bandwidth, it takes 10 x 10 mm cuvettes or 16 mm tubes, and it has analogue and RS232 outputs.

The Melting Point Apparatus (EL-CLE-10995) heats from ambient to 250 degrees C at a manually adjustable 1 to 20 degrees C per minute, with a 10 degrees C per minute setting for rapid heating. It holds up to three capillary tubes, has an illuminated detachable magnifying lens and runs on 220/240 V.

Which melting point apparatus should a laboratory choose?

The digital apparatus reaches 300 degrees C, tests two samples at once and shows the temperature on an LED display. The standard apparatus reaches 250 degrees C, holds three capillaries and has a manually set heating rate. The simple aluminium block uses a laboratory thermometer, which is not included.

Can the colorimeter record data?

Yes. It has a kinetic mode for continuous readings, an analogue output of 0 to 2 V and an RS232 output.

Which regulator fits which gas supply?

The fixed flow, miniflow and balloon regulators all fit 34 and 110 litre canisters. The fixed flow regulator delivers 0.5 litres per minute and shows the remaining contents, the miniflow regulator is adjustable from 0.5 to 1.5 litres per minute, and the separate screw-on valve is for the mini gas bottles.
