How the series and parallel pump test is done
Two identical pumps in series pass the same flow and their heads add, which is the principle of a multi stage pump. Two pumps in parallel work against the same head and their flows add. Running both arrangements on one rig lets students see these rules on real curves and judge when a system needs more pressure or more flow.
Because the DC drive allows the speed to be changed, the set-up also shows the effect of speed on pump performance. Students plot speed against discharge, head against discharge at several speeds, and efficiency at different speeds and heads, using torque from the swinging field dynamometer and speed from the digital indicator to find shaft power, 2 x pi x N x T / 60.
