Uses of laboratory water baths

Thermostatic and digital water baths hold samples at a set temperature for incubation, serological tests, quality control testing and other temperature-controlled experiments. The triple bath runs three temperatures at once and is listed for heating samples in micro tubes for molecular biology work.

Boiling water baths with concentric rings, in aluminium, stainless steel or copper, heat beakers, flasks and evaporating dishes of different sizes over hot water rather than a flame. The heated ultrasonic baths are used for ultrasonic cleaning, degassing and sample preparation.

The Heated Timed Ultrasonic Bath, 45 Litre (EL-WB-10805) works at 38 kHz with 400 W effective and 1600 W peak ultrasonic power, heats from 30 to 80 degrees C, and has a timer from 1 minute up to 12 hours.

What is the difference between a stirred and an unstirred water bath?

A stirred bath circulates the water with a built-in stirrer, which evens out the temperature in the bath; the 8 litre digital model has an adjustable-speed stirrer. Unstirred baths rely on natural convection and are listed here from 2.5 to 22 litres.

Which water bath is used for serology?

Two serological baths are listed: the Digital Serological Water Bath (EL-WB-10810) with PID control and 0.1 degree accuracy, and the double-walled Serological Water Bath (EL-WB-10811) with a stainless steel dome cover and removable perforated shelves.

How can evaporation and heat loss be reduced?
