Measuring pH in the laboratory

A pH meter measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution more precisely than indicator paper. In school and college chemistry it is used to compare strong and weak acids and bases, to follow a neutralisation, and to plot a titration curve by reading the pH after each addition from a burette. The same instruments can test water, soil extracts and food samples.

Readings are only as good as the calibration. The buffer capsules make fresh calibration solutions, the testers calibrate against them automatically, and the storage bottle keeps the glass electrode wet between sessions. Electrodes used in milk or protein-rich foods are cleaned with the dedicated probe cleaner.

Specification examples

The pH Bench Meter (EL-PM-11016) reads 0 to 14 pH with 0.01 pH resolution on a large 18 mm LCD. It has a spill-proof front panel and a BNC connector for the pH electrode, which is not included, and runs on one 9 V PP3 battery, also not included.

The Pocket pH Meter (EL-PM-11014) has a retractable electrode that extends up to 80 mm and reads 0 to 14.0 pH in 0.1 steps or 0 to 14.00 pH in 0.01 steps. It is calibrated by hand with a screw trim pot, sits in an impact-resistant ABS case with a splash-proof keypad, and comes with the electrode, a protective cap, a calibration screwdriver, 50 mL of calibration solution and a carry case.

How is a laboratory pH meter priced?

How are the meters and testers calibrated?

Each buffer capsule is split and dissolved in 100 mL of deionised or distilled water to make a calibration buffer. The pocket testers then calibrate automatically at one or two points, the tester with buffer recognition identifies the buffer itself, and the pocket pH meter is adjusted by hand with its screw trim pot.

Which instrument suits student practicals?

For groups of students, the pocket testers and the pocket pH meter are compact handheld instruments. The bench meter, with its separate electrode and large display, suits a fixed station for titration curves and teacher demonstrations.
