How the gear pump test is done
In a gear pump, oil is trapped in the spaces between the gear teeth and the casing and carried round from the suction side to the delivery side, while the meshing teeth stop it from flowing back. Each revolution moves a nearly fixed volume, so the gear pump is a positive displacement machine, widely used in lubrication systems and hydraulic power circuits.
Students measure discharge with the measuring tank and stop watch, head from the delivery pressure and suction vacuum gauges, and input from the control panel. Output power is rho x g x Q x H, using the density of the oil. Plotting head and efficiency against discharge at each speed shows that the discharge stays almost constant as the head rises, apart from a small leakage, or slip, past the gear teeth.
- Check the oil level in the supply tank and select the drive speed.
- Start the pump and set the first delivery pressure.
- Read the delivery pressure and suction vacuum gauges.
- Time the oil rise in the measuring tank on the piezometer scale.
- Repeat at higher delivery pressures and at the other speeds, then plot the curves.
