How the reciprocating pump test is done
A reciprocating pump is a positive displacement machine: a piston moving in a cylinder draws water in through a suction valve and pushes it out through a delivery valve. In a double-acting pump both sides of the piston work, so there are two deliveries per revolution and the flow is smoother than from a single-acting pump. Unlike a centrifugal pump, its discharge depends mainly on speed rather than on the delivery head.
The theoretical discharge of a double-acting pump is Qth = 2 x A x L x N / 60, where A is the piston area, L the stroke and N the speed in RPM. Comparing it with the measured discharge gives the volumetric efficiency and the slip. Pump output is rho x g x Q x H, and dividing it by the input gives the efficiency.
- Fill the supply tank and start the pump at the chosen speed setting.
- Set the first delivery head and read the pressure and vacuum gauges.
- Close the measuring tank drain and time the rise on the piezometer scale with the stop watch.
- Record the speed and electrical input from the control panel.
- Change the delivery head or speed and repeat, then plot head and efficiency against discharge.
