What each kit teaches

The shapes of molecules set shows how bonding pairs and lone pairs of electrons decide whether a molecule is linear, bent, trigonal planar, pyramidal, tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramidal or octahedral, and the atomic orbital set shows the s, p and d orbitals and their hybrids that lie behind those shapes.

The magnetic sodium chloride kit builds the cubic lattice of an ionic compound, and the magnetic water kits show hydrogen bonding between water molecules; each cup also contains a sodium and a chloride ion, so students can model a dissolving salt. The vibrating atoms model demonstrates the motion of particles in a solid, the basic structures set covers giant structures such as diamond and graphite, and the carbon nanotube model introduces nanomaterials. What is in each cup of the magnetic water kit?

Each cup holds 12 water molecules, one sodium ion, one chloride ion, one ethane molecule and one hydroxyl group. The oxygen atoms carry two fixed magnets and the hydrogen atoms are removable. The 6-cup set also includes a CD of lesson plans.

How are the density cubes and equal-mass cylinders different?

The density cubes are all 25 mm cubes, so they have the same volume but different masses. The equal-mass cylinders all weigh 100 g and have the same diameter, so their different lengths show different densities.
