How laboratory stirrers are used

A magnetic stirrer spins a coated bar inside a beaker or flask, so a solution is mixed without a paddle in the liquid. It is used to dissolve solids, prepare reagents and buffers, and keep a solution moving during a titration or reaction. Hotplate stirrers do the same while heating, for example when a solid dissolves only in warm solvent.

The vortex mixer works differently: a test tube pressed on its cup is shaken rapidly to re-suspend cells or chemical pellets. The motorless stirrer, with no motor bearings to wear, suits long continuous runs, and the ultra thin model is a compact unit rated IP65.

Stirrer specifications

The Magnetic Stirrer (EL-LS-10748) stirs up to 2 litres at a continuously variable 50 to 1500 rpm, with front-panel speed control, an ON/OFF switch with indicator lamp and two PTFE-coated bars of 9 x 25 mm and 9 x 35 mm. The Advanced Ceramic Hot Plate Magnetic Stirrer (EL-LS-10746) has a glass ceramic top on a powder-coated die-cast aluminium body, heats to 520 degrees C, stirs up to 5 litres at up to 1500 rpm, and is listed for 110 V 60 Hz or 220 V 50 Hz supplies.

How much liquid can each stirrer mix?

The ultra thin stirrer takes up to 0.8 litre, the mini stirrer 1.5 litres, the Magnetic Stirrer, the Magnetic Stirrer With Hot Plate and the digital hotplate stirrer about 2 litres, and the Hot Plate Magnetic Stirrer and advanced ceramic model up to 5 litres.

Are stirrer bars included?

The Magnetic Stirrer and the Magnetic Stirrer With Hot Plate each come with two coated bars, and the Hot Plate Magnetic Stirrer lists a stirrer bar, support rod and boss head as accessories. Spare bars of 25 x 6 mm are sold in packs of 10 (EL-LS-10741).

When is a vortex mixer used instead of a magnetic stirrer?

A vortex mixer is for short, vigorous mixing inside test tubes, such as re-suspending a pellet. A magnetic stirrer is for steady mixing of larger volumes in beakers and flasks.
