How the centrifugal pump test is done
A centrifugal pump adds energy to water with a spinning impeller, and its performance is described by characteristic curves: head, input power and efficiency plotted against discharge at constant speed. Closing the gate valve raises the head and cuts the flow; opening it does the reverse, so one pump can be tested across its full operating range.
Total head is the delivery pressure reading plus the suction vacuum reading, both converted to metres of water, plus any height difference between the gauges. Output power is rho x g x Q x H, input power comes from the energy meter, and overall efficiency = output / input. The peak of the efficiency curve marks the duty point a pump should be selected for.
- Prime the pump and start it with the gate valve partly open.
- Set the gate valve to the first test position and let the flow settle.
- Read the suction vacuum and delivery pressure gauges.
- Time the rise of water in the measuring tank with the stop watch to get the discharge.
- Take the energy meter reading for input power, then repeat at several valve openings.
