How the hydraulic ram experiment is done
A hydraulic ram needs no motor at the ram itself. Water from the overhead tank runs down the drive pipe and out through the open pulse valve until the flow is fast enough to slam the valve shut. The sudden stop causes a pressure rise, the water hammer effect, which opens the non-return valve and pushes a little water into the air vessel and up the delivery line. The pressure then falls, the pulse valve reopens and the cycle repeats. The air vessel evens these pulses into a steadier delivery.
Efficiency by D'Aubuisson's method is eta = q x H / ((q + Q) x h), and by Rankine's method eta = q x (H - h) / (Q x h), where q is the useful water delivered to head H, Q is the waste water and h is the supply head.
- Run the 1 HP pump to fill the overhead tank and hold the supply head at 2.5 m.
- Start the ram by pressing the pulse valve a few times until it cycles by itself.
- Set the delivery head and read it on the Bourdon pressure gauge.
- Collect the useful and waste water in their separate measuring tanks and time each rise.
- Change the pulse valve setting or delivery head, repeat, and calculate the efficiency.
