Fluid mechanics experiments

With these apparatus a fluid mechanics course can observe laminar, transitional and turbulent flow by dye injection and relate each regime to the Reynolds number; verify Bernoulli's equation along an acrylic test section fitted with piezometer tubes; and find coefficients of discharge for a venturimeter, an orificemeter, V, rectangular and trapezoidal notches, and sharp-crested, broad-crested and ogee weirs.

Pipe-flow work covers the friction factor in two pipe sizes and the loss coefficients of an enlargement, a contraction, a bend, an elbow and two valves. Other experiments measure the force of a water jet on a flat plate and a hemispherical cup, the metacentric height of a floating pontoon, point velocity with a Pitot tube, free and forced vortex surface profiles, and the discharge, velocity and contraction coefficients of orifices and mouthpieces from jet trajectories.

Apparatus details

The Metacentric Height Apparatus (EL-FML-11044) floats a stainless steel pontoon with a horizontal guide bar in a tank of about 600 x 400 x 400 mm with a glass or Perspex front window; two movable hangers on a cross bar tilt the model, and a pendulum pointer reads the angle on a graduated arc. The Discharge over Notches Apparatus (EL-FML-11039) has a 600 x 250 x 180 mm channel, a hook and pointer gauge with a Vernier scale, a 25 litre measuring tank and a 70 litre sump.

Most of the benches recirculate water from a sump through an FHP pump and a measuring tank. Most Lab Exports products carry a one-year manufacturer warranty, and on-site installation is offered in certain areas for engineering equipment.

The Bernoulli Theorem Apparatus demonstrates the energy equation directly. For flow measurement, the venturimeter and orificemeter set-up is used for meter calibration, the Pitot static tube set-up for point velocity, and the flow measurement devices bench compares a turbine flow meter, a rotameter, an orificemeter and a venturimeter.

What mouthpieces come with the orifice apparatus?

Besides 8 mm and 10 mm orifices, it includes mouthpieces with L/D ratios of 4 and 1, a Borda's mouthpiece and a convergent mouthpiece, an X-Y gauge for jet coordinates and a 0.5 HP centrifugal pump with a by-pass valve.

How does the Reynolds apparatus show laminar and turbulent flow?

Dye from a stainless steel or copper vessel is injected into water flowing through a borosilicate glass tube fed by a 40 litre constant head tank through a bell-mouth entry. The dye line shows the flow regime, and discharge is measured with a measuring cylinder and an electronic stop watch to calculate the Reynolds number.
