How the jet pump test is done
A jet pump combines a centrifugal pump with an ejector. Part of the delivered water is sent back through a nozzle at high velocity; the jet creates low pressure in the throat of the ejector, draws in more water from the suction side and passes the combined flow on through a diffuser. This lets the pump lift water from a greater depth than a plain centrifugal pump can reach.
In the test, the pressure and vacuum gauge readings give the total head, the measuring tank and a stop watch give the discharge, and the energy meter gives the electrical input. Output power is rho x g x Q x H, and overall efficiency is output divided by input. Curves of head and efficiency against discharge show the working range of the pump.
- Fill the supply tank with clean water and prime the pump.
- Switch on from the control panel and let the flow settle.
- Read the delivery pressure and suction vacuum for the total head.
- Time the rise in the measuring tank and note the energy meter reading.
- Throttle the delivery to new settings and repeat, then plot the curves.
