U-Tube Manometer on Stand, Wall Hanging Type
Product Code : EL-POM-10358
Quick answer: A U-tube manometer measures pressure difference from the difference in height of a liquid in the two arms of a U-shaped tube. This wall-hanging type is mounted on a wooden base with a 15 cm scale and meter rule, and saves bench space. It is used in pressure and flow measurement lessons. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the manometer is used
With both arms open to the air, the liquid stands at the same level in each. When one arm is connected to a gas supply or to a point in a flow line, the pressure difference pushes the liquid down on that side and up on the other until the extra column balances it. The pressure difference is then p1 - p2 = rho g h, where h is the difference in level and rho the density of the manometric liquid.
- Hang the manometer on a wall so that the tube is vertical.
- Fill the U-tube to about half height with water or another suitable liquid and note the level in both arms.
- Connect one arm to the pressure point with rubber tubing, leaving the other open or connecting it to a second point.
- Read the levels in both arms and calculate h and the pressure difference.
Connecting the two arms across a restriction in a pipe, such as an orifice or a venturi, shows how the pressure difference grows with the rate of flow, the basis of many flow meters used in industrial plants.

Frequently asked questions
How is pressure found with a U-tube manometer?
From the difference in liquid level h between the two arms: the pressure difference is rho g h, where rho is the density of the liquid in the tube.
Is there a table model of this U-tube manometer?
Yes. The table model stands on a wooden base and has a 50 cm scale for a longer reading range.
