Hare’s Apparatus
Product Code : SCL-POM-11179
Quick answer: Hare's apparatus compares the densities of two liquids by drawing them up two columns under the same reduced pressure and measuring the heights. It has a three-limbed tube on a polished stand with a 45 cm scale, zero at the bottom, divided in centimetres and millimetres. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the Hare's apparatus experiment is done
The two outer limbs dip into beakers of the two liquids, and air is drawn out through the third limb. The pressure above both columns falls by the same amount, so atmospheric pressure pushes each liquid up until p0 - p = rho1 g h1 = rho2 g h2. The heights of the columns are therefore inversely proportional to the densities, rho1/rho2 = h2/h1. If one liquid is water, the ratio gives the relative density of the other liquid directly.
- Stand the apparatus upright and place a beaker of each liquid under one of the outer limbs, so that the limb ends dip below the surface.
- Fit a rubber tube with a pinch cock to the third limb.
- Draw out a little air through the rubber tube so that both liquids rise, then close the pinch cock.
- Read the height of each column above the liquid surface in its beaker on the 45 cm scale.
- Repeat at several different heights and average the ratio h2/h1.
Plotting the pairs of heights h1 against h2 gives a straight line whose slope is the density ratio, which reduces the effect of any single reading error. The method needs no balance and works for any two liquids that do not mix or react when drawn into the tube.
