How the Boyle's law experiment is done

Boyle's law states that for a fixed mass of gas at constant temperature, pressure and volume are inversely proportional: p x V = constant. In this apparatus the gas is the column of air trapped above the oil in the closed glass tube. Pumping air into the oil chamber pushes oil up the tube, so the trapped air is squeezed into a smaller volume while the Bourdon gauge shows the rising pressure.

1. Connect an air compression pump to the valve on the oil chamber and check that the O-ring joint is seated.
2. Read the starting volume of trapped air on the 0-65 cm³ scale and the pressure on the Bourdon gauge.
3. Pump air in a little at a time, then wait a minute for the oil level and the air temperature to settle.
4. Record each pair of pressure and volume readings.
5. Release the pressure slowly through the valve and take a second set of readings as the air expands.

A graph of pressure against 1/volume gives a straight line through the origin, and the product p x V stays nearly constant across the readings. Waiting after each change lets the heat produced by compression escape, so the process stays close to isothermal.
