How the Nicholson hydrometer experiment is done
The Nicholson hydrometer works by constant immersion: weights are always added to the upper pan until the instrument floats with a fixed mark on its stem at the water surface, so the upthrust, and therefore the total weight carried, is the same every time. Differences between the loads then give the weight of the specimen in air and in water.
- Float the hydrometer in water and add weights W1 to the pan to sink it to the fixed mark.
- Place the solid on the pan and find the smaller load W2 that brings it back to the mark; the weight of the solid in air is W1 - W2.
- Move the solid into the bucket below and find the load W3 needed; the loss of weight in water is W3 - W2.
- Calculate the specific gravity of the solid as (W1 - W2) / (W3 - W2).
For a liquid, the hydrometer is sunk to the mark first in water and then in the liquid. The ratio of the total weight carried (hydrometer plus load) in the liquid to that in water gives the specific gravity of the liquid.
