How the air pump is used

A bell jar or other receiver is seated on the aluminium plate, or a separate vessel is joined to the plate through rubber pressure tubing, and the pump is then worked to draw the air out. As air is removed, the pressure inside the vessel falls below atmospheric pressure. That reduced pressure is the starting point for most school experiments on air pressure and on how sound travels through a medium.

The stopcock air inlet screw on the plate controls the vacuum. Kept closed, it holds the reduced pressure while an observation is made; opened slowly, it lets air back in so the receiver can be lifted off without a sudden rush of air.

1. Stand the pump on the bench on its wooden base and check that the stopcock air inlet screw is closed.
2. Seat the bell jar on the aluminium plate, or connect the vessel to the tubing connection with rubber pressure tubing.
3. Work the pump steadily to draw air out of the vessel.
4. Make the observation while the reduced pressure is held, then open the air inlet screw to let air back in.
