Lead is toxic if swallowed: handle the shots with gloves or wash hands after use, and keep food and drink away from the bench.

Uses

Lead has a low specific heat capacity, about 0.13 J/(g deg C), and a high density, about 11.3 g/cm³. A small mass of shot therefore heats quickly, carries a measurable amount of heat into a calorimeter and sinks at once in water, which makes it a convenient solid for several standard practicals. The best known is finding the specific heat of lead by the method of mixtures.

1. Weigh a sample of lead shots on a laboratory balance.
2. Heat the shots to a known temperature, for example in a boiling tube placed in a steam heater or boiling water bath.
3. Weigh a calorimeter with a known mass of water and note its temperature.
4. Tip the hot shots quickly into the calorimeter, stir and record the highest steady temperature.
5. Work out the specific heat of lead from heat lost by the shots = heat gained by the water and calorimeter.

The same shots serve in displacement experiments for density and Archimedes' principle, and as small adjustable loads in lever, pulley and pendulum work.
