How it is used
A Venturi mask works on the Bernoulli principle. Oxygen is forced through a narrow jet at high velocity, which lowers the pressure around it and draws room air in through side ports in a fixed ratio. The jet opening sets that ratio, so each colour-coded jet delivers a set oxygen percentage (FiO2) largely independent of how deeply or quickly the patient breathes.
That fixed, predictable concentration is why the Venturi mask is the usual choice for controlled oxygen therapy, for example in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who must not receive too much oxygen.
- Choose the jet for the prescribed FiO2 and fit it to the mask.
- Connect the tubing to the oxygen flow meter and set the flow specified for that jet.
- Place the mask over the nose and mouth, shape the nose clip and adjust the strap.
- Fit the humidity cup when humidification is needed.
- Discard the mask after use by one patient.
