How the infusion pump is used
A volumetric pump moves fluid by squeezing a length of the infusion set tubing with a peristaltic mechanism, so the volume pumped per hour is fixed by the mechanism rather than by the height of the bag or the patient's venous pressure. That gives a steady, known rate for fluids, antibiotics and other infusions where a gravity drip would drift.
The pump is programmed by volume, time and rate. When the set volume has been delivered it drops to a keep-vein-open (KVO) rate of 1 or 3 ml/h so the cannula does not block, and a bolus programme of 100-900 ml/h allows rapid delivery when ordered.
- Mount the pump on an IV pole or rail and connect it to mains power or run it on battery.
- Load a standard infusion set into the pump and close the door.
- Enter the rate and the volume limit or time, and start the infusion after the self-test.
- Respond to any alarm: occlusion, air-in-line, door open, battery or power status, or system error.
