How it works and how it is used
An oxygen concentrator uses pressure swing adsorption. A compressor pushes room air through a bed of molecular sieve that holds back nitrogen, so the gas leaving the bed is mostly oxygen; the bed is then depressurised to release the nitrogen, and two beds alternate to keep the output continuous. The result is a steady supply of 93% oxygen from electricity and room air.
Concentrators serve low-flow oxygen therapy by nasal cannula, mask or humidifier on wards, in clinics and wherever cylinder supply is costly or unreliable. With a flow splitter, one unit can serve several patients who each need a low flow.
This concentrator is not suitable as the oxygen source for other respiratory support equipment such as ventilators, CPAP devices or high-flow nasal oxygen systems.
