How it is used
Ultrasonic analyzers work out oxygen concentration from the speed of sound in the gas. Sound travels at a different speed in oxygen than in nitrogen, so by timing ultrasonic pulses across a chamber of known length the instrument calculates the oxygen fraction, and the same timing method gives the flow rate. With no chemical fuel cell to use up, the sensing chamber is permanent.
