How it is used
Medical oxygen from cylinders, pipelines and concentrators is almost completely dry. Breathed for long periods, dry gas irritates the nose and throat and thickens secretions. A bubble-through humidifier passes the gas through a column of water in the bottle before it reaches the patient's tubing, so it picks up water vapour on the way.
This bottle is non-heated, so it humidifies at room temperature and suits routine oxygen therapy by nasal cannula or mask. The pop-off valve releases pressure if the outlet tubing is kinked or blocked, protecting the bottle and the flow meter.
- Fill the bottle with sterile or distilled water between the minimum and maximum marks.
- Screw on the cap and connect it to the flow meter outlet with the DISS connector.
- Attach the patient's oxygen tubing and set the prescribed flow, up to 15 L/min.
- Top up or change the water regularly and autoclave or disinfect the bottle between patients.
