How it is used
Many patients on oxygen, particularly infants and young children, need only low flows of a litre or two per minute, while a single concentrator produces several times that. A flow splitter connects to the concentrator outlet and shares its output between five patients, with a separate flowmeter at each outlet so every patient receives the flow prescribed for them.
The total flow drawn through all five outlets cannot exceed what the concentrator or supply delivers. Staff therefore add up the prescribed flows before connecting patients and keep the sum within the source's rated output.
