How the flow meter is used
A Thorpe tube flow meter has a tapered transparent tube with a float inside. Gas enters at the bottom; as the needle valve is opened, the flow lifts the float until the gap around it passes exactly that flow, and the reading is taken against the graduated scale. In a pressure-compensated meter the needle valve sits after the tube, so the reading stays correct even with a humidifier or other back-pressure on the outlet.
The meter is calibrated for an inlet pressure of 50-55 psi (345-380 kPa, 3.4-3.8 bar), so it is fed from a pipeline outlet or a regulator set to that range.
- Connect the DISS inlet to the wall panel outlet or to the cylinder regulator.
- Attach a humidifier bottle and the patient's oxygen tubing to the outlet if prescribed.
- Turn the knob slowly until the float lines up with the prescribed flow.
- Read the flow from any angle across the 270 degree scale and recheck after moving the patient.
