How it is used
The sensor shines red and infrared light through the tissue and measures how much of each wavelength passes through. Because oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin absorb the two wavelengths differently, the ratio gives the oxygen saturation, and the pulsing part of the signal gives the heart rate. The waveform on screen lets staff see whether the signal is clean before relying on the number.
Unlike a fingertip spot-check unit, this oximeter is built for continuous monitoring as well as spot checks, with adjustable SpO2 and heart-rate alarms that can be silenced. The rechargeable battery lasts more than a full shift, and three AA cells keep it running where charging is not possible.
