How the stethoscope is used
A binaural stethoscope carries sound from the chest piece through the Y tube to both ears, shutting out room noise so that faint body sounds can be heard. Auscultation of the heart listens for the two normal heart sounds and for murmurs or added sounds; auscultation of the lungs compares breath sounds on each side and listens for wheezes or crackles.
The double-cup chest piece gives two listening surfaces: the larger 43-47 mm diaphragm for adults and the smaller 28-36 mm one for children, selected by turning the chest piece. Its sensitivity is specified for both the lower frequencies of heart sounds (50-1,000 Hz) and the higher frequencies of breath sounds (600-1,500 Hz).
- Fit the ear pieces pointing slightly forward, in line with the ear canals.
- Turn the chest piece to open the adult or paediatric side.
- Place the diaphragm firmly on bare skin at the standard listening points.
- Listen through complete breaths or several heartbeats at each point, then wipe the chest piece clean.
