How the Pinard stethoscope is used
The Pinard horn is the simplest way to hear the foetal heart. Its wide bell collects sound from the mother's abdomen and the hollow body carries it straight to the listener's ear at the flat end, with no tubing, electronics or batteries. It remains standard equipment for midwives, particularly where doppler detectors are unavailable or power is unreliable.
The examiner first feels the abdomen to find the foetal back, over which the heart sounds are usually clearest, then counts the beats for a full minute while checking the mother's own pulse so that the two are not confused.
- Locate the foetal back by palpating the abdomen.
- Place the bell end firmly on the abdomen over that point, at right angles to the skin.
- Press the ear to the flat end and take the hand away, so that the horn is held in place only by the head.
- Count the foetal heartbeats for one minute while feeling the mother's pulse at the wrist.
