How the otoscope is used
An otoscope combines a light source, a magnifying lens and a cone-shaped speculum that fits into the ear canal. Light travels down the speculum to the eardrum and the examiner views the lit canal through the lens, checking for wax, foreign bodies, inflammation of the canal and changes in the colour, position or integrity of the tympanic membrane.
The port on the handle takes an insufflation bulb. Squeezing the bulb sends a small puff of air into the sealed canal, and watching whether the eardrum moves helps the examiner judge whether fluid lies behind it (pneumatic otoscopy).
- Choose the largest speculum that fits the ear canal comfortably and fit it to the head.
- Gently pull the outer ear to straighten the canal: up and back in adults, down and back in young children.
- Insert the speculum a short way and view the canal and eardrum through the lens.
- After the examination, clean and disinfect the speculum before it is used again.
