How the CTG monitor is used
Cardiotocography records two signals side by side on the same paper: the foetal heart rate, picked up by an ultrasound doppler transducer placed over the foetal heart, and the mother's uterine contractions, sensed by a pressure transducer (tocodynamometer) on the upper abdomen. Reading the two traces together shows how the foetal heart rate responds to each contraction.
This monitor has two FHR channels, so twins can be followed at once with their traces shown separately. An Automatic Foetal Movement (AFM) feature and a wired remote switch let events and movements be marked on the record.
- Enter the patient information and load the Z-folded paper.
- Place the ultrasound transducer over the foetal heart (one per twin) and the UC transducer on the upper abdomen; the monitor detects each transducer automatically.
- Set the paper speed to 1, 2 or 3 cm/min and choose which FHR channel plays on the loudspeaker.
- Record for the required period, marking events with the remote switch, then store the exam.
