How it is used
During an oral or throat examination the tongue hides the back of the mouth. Pressing it gently down and forward with a flat blade exposes the tonsils, the soft palate and the back wall of the throat, so the examiner can inspect them under a light and, where needed, take a throat swab.
Wood is used because it is light, stiff enough to hold the tongue without bending and cheap enough to discard after one patient. The rounded extremities avoid scratching the mouth, and breaking the blade straight after use makes sure it cannot be used again.
