How the model is used in teaching
The brain stem, made up of the midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata, carries the nerve pathways between the brain and the spinal cord and contains the centres that control breathing, heart rate and many reflexes. Ten of the twelve pairs of cranial nerves attach to it, which makes it the key region for learning the cranial nerves.
Enlarged about three times and with the nerve roots picked out in yellow, the model lets students match each cranial nerve to its point of attachment, an exercise that is hard to do on a life-size brain or a flat diagram.
