How the model is used in teaching
A neuron receives signals through its dendrites and cell body and sends them on along a single long axon. In many neurons the axon is wrapped in a myelin sheath, an insulating layer broken at regular intervals by gaps called nodes of Ranvier. The impulse jumps from node to node, known as saltatory conduction, which is why myelinated fibres conduct much faster than unmyelinated ones.
At 2500 times enlargement these features, invisible without a microscope, can be pointed out to a whole class, and the key card lets students check each numbered part during revision.
