How the model is used in teaching
Each half of the lower jaw carries incisors, a canine, premolars and molars, and each tooth is anchored in the bone by one or more roots. Nerves and blood vessels enter each root through a small opening at its tip and supply the pulp; in the lower jaw they branch from the inferior alveolar nerve and artery, which run through a canal inside the bone.
Because the model is enlarged and dissected, students can compare the number and shape of the roots of different teeth and follow the nerve and vessel supply. This supports lessons on tooth types in school biology and on toothache, dental anaesthesia and extraction in dental and nursing courses.
