How the model is used in teaching
Because the nasal cavity, mouth, pharynx and larynx are shown together, the model is well suited to explaining how the air and food passages share the pharynx and then separate: air passes from the nose through the pharynx into the larynx, while food passes from the mouth through the pharynx into the oesophagus behind the larynx. The neck vertebrae show how the spinal column supports the head and encloses the spinal cord.
