How the model is used to explain hearing
Hearing is taught as a chain of steps, and a dissectible model lets each step be shown on the part concerned. The pinna collects sound and funnels it into the auditory canal; the tympanic membrane vibrates; the malleus, incus and stapes pass the vibration to the oval window; waves in the fluid of the cochlea stimulate hair cells; and the auditory nerve carries the signal to the brain. The semicircular canals beside the cochlea explain the second job of the ear, balance.
