How the horseshoe magnet is used in teaching
Bending a magnet into a U places the north and south poles side by side, so the field lines cross the short gap between them almost straight and closely packed. The region between the poles therefore has a strong, nearly uniform field, which makes the horseshoe magnet the usual field source for the force-on-a-conductor experiment and simple motor demonstrations.

- Place a card across the poles, sprinkle iron filings and tap to show the concentrated field in the gap.
- Hang a light conductor between the poles, pass a small current and observe the force predicted by Fleming's left-hand rule.
- Replace the keeper across the poles when the lesson ends.
