How the U-shaped magnet is used
A U-shaped magnet has long, parallel limbs, so its two poles sit side by side at the open end with a fairly uniform field between them. The longer, narrower profile makes it easy to slide the pole gap over a wire, a coil or a small compass, and the marked north pole lets students check field direction without first testing it with a compass.

- Place the magnet under a card and sprinkle iron filings to compare its field with that of a bar magnet.
- Use a plotting compass between the limbs to show that the field runs from the north pole to the south pole across the gap.
- Bring each pole towards the matching pole of a suspended magnet to show repulsion, then reverse it to show attraction; refit the keeper afterwards.
