Neodymium Cylinder
Product Code : EL-M-10308
Quick answer: The neodymium cylinder is a rare-earth rod magnet with a polish-coated surface, giving a strong field for its size and high resistance to demagnetisation. It is offered in four sizes, 5 x 10, 10 x 15, 10 x 40 and 13 x 10 mm (diameter x length), for induction, eddy-current and field-strength experiments. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

Uses
A cylindrical neodymium magnet concentrates a strong field at its two end faces, and its rod shape lets it pass through coils and tubes. Dropping one down a copper tube is a striking demonstration of Lenz's law: the moving magnet induces eddy currents in the tube, whose own field opposes the motion, so the magnet falls slowly. Pushed into a coil connected to a galvanometer, it gives a large deflection from a small movement.
The long 10 x 40 mm size suits induction coils and tube-drop experiments, while the shorter sizes fit compact models, compass-deflection tests and comparisons of field strength against steel, Alnico and ferrite magnets. As with all neodymium magnets, keep them apart from each other, from pacemakers and from electronic storage, and supervise students.

Frequently asked questions
What sizes is the neodymium cylinder magnet available in?
Four sizes (diameter x length): 5 x 10, 10 x 15, 10 x 40 and 13 x 10 mm.
Why does a neodymium magnet fall slowly through a copper tube?
The falling magnet induces eddy currents in the copper, and by Lenz's law their magnetic field opposes the motion, braking the fall.
What is the price of the neodymium cylinder magnet?
