Fleming’s Right Hand Rule
Product Code : SCL-M-11199
Quick answer: The Fleming's right hand rule apparatus demonstrates electromagnetic induction: a copper conductor is moved through the gap of a permanent U-shaped magnet, and a centre-zero indicator shows the size and direction of the induced current. Students check each result with the right-hand rule used for generators. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the Fleming's right hand rule experiment is done
When a conductor moves through a magnetic field it cuts field lines and an e.m.f. is induced across it. By Faraday's law the e.m.f. equals the rate of change of flux linkage, e = -dPhi/dt, which for a straight conductor becomes e = BLv. Fleming's right-hand rule gives the current direction: with the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the right hand at right angles, the thumb shows the motion, the forefinger the field (north to south) and the middle finger the induced current.
- Place the apparatus on a bench and check that the indicator rests at the centre zero.
- Move the copper conductor steadily through the magnet gap in one direction and note which way the pointer deflects.
- Move it back the other way and observe the reversed deflection.
- Move the conductor faster and slower to show that the deflection grows with speed, then hold it still to show that no current flows without motion.
- Predict each direction with the right-hand rule before moving the conductor, then confirm it on the indicator.
Key features
- Centre-zero indicator shows both the direction and the size of the induced current.
- Permanent U-shaped magnet provides the field across the conductor path.
- Guided copper conductor moves smoothly through the magnet gap.
- Non-conductive polymer base panel.
- 4 mm binding posts allow an external meter or resistance to be connected.
- Printed direction layout helps students line up thumb, forefinger and middle finger.

Frequently asked questions
What does Fleming's right hand rule apparatus demonstrate?
Electromagnetic induction: moving a conductor through a magnetic field induces a current whose direction follows Fleming's right-hand rule.
Why does the pointer reverse when the conductor moves back?
Reversing the motion reverses the direction in which the field lines are cut, so the induced e.m.f. and current reverse too.
What is the price of the Fleming's right hand rule apparatus?
