How ferrite rings are used
For the floating-ring demonstration the rings are magnetised through their thickness, so one flat face is a north pole and the other a south pole. Slide two rings onto a vertical rod with like faces together and the upper ring floats above the lower one, held up by magnetic repulsion against gravity.
- Stand a non-magnetic rod, such as wood or plastic, upright in a base.
- Slide the first ring onto the rod, then add a second ring with the same face downwards so that like poles face each other.
- Watch the upper ring float; add more rings and note how the gaps change down the stack.
- Press the top ring down gently and release it to show the springy repulsive force.
The gaps are smallest at the bottom because each lower ring must support the weight of all the rings above it, a neat way to link magnetic force with weight.
