How it is used
An open water bath loses much of its heat through the surface, both by evaporation and by convection into the room air. A single layer of floating hollow spheres covers most of that surface, so less water evaporates, the bath needs topping up less often and the heater works less to hold the set temperature.
Unlike a solid lid, the spheres let the user reach in and move vessels without removing a cover: flasks and tubes push the balls aside and the layer closes again around them.
