How it is used
The copper water bath is the traditional way to heat substances gently in a school or college laboratory. The bath is part-filled with water and set on a tripod over a Bunsen burner; as the water boils, steam and hot water heat the vessel resting on the rings, so the contents never get much hotter than 100°C. That protects heat-sensitive or flammable liquids from a direct flame.
Copper conducts heat very well, so the bowl warms quickly and evenly, and the hemispherical shape sits steadily on a tripod ring. The concentric rings are removed one at a time until the opening fits the vessel, from a small evaporating dish to a larger flask.

- Light the burner and keep the water gently boiling, topping it up so the bath never boils dry.
