How it is used
In an unstirred bath the heater warms the water from below and heat spreads through the tank by natural convection, so there is no pump or stirrer to maintain. The thermostat switches the heater on and off to hold the set point, and at 45°C the water stays within ±0.5°C. The 22 litre tank is the size to choose when a class or a routine workload needs many flasks, bottles or tube racks heated at once.
The bath will run at 100°C but is not designed for continuous boiling. Above 60°C a lid is recommended to cut evaporation and keep the temperature steady.
- Stand the bath on a level bench and fill the tank with enough water to cover the samples, staying below the rim.
- Set the thermostat to the required temperature and let the water settle at that value.
- Load flasks, bottles or tube racks, and fit a lid when working above 60°C.
- Top up the water during long runs, as some is lost to evaporation.
