How the vortex mixer is used
The mixing head moves in a small eccentric circle, so when the base of a tube is pressed onto it the liquid inside spins into a vortex within seconds. This gives vigorous, even mixing of small volumes that would be slow to mix by inversion, and it breaks up pellets of cells or precipitate that have settled after centrifugation.
In touch mode the head runs only while a tube is pressed down on it, which suits quick mixing of many tubes one after another. Continuous mode keeps the head running for longer mixing without holding pressure on the tube.
- Stand the mixer on a clean, flat bench so the suction feet grip.
- Select touch or continuous mode and set a low speed.
- Hold the capped tube near its top and press its base onto the head.
- Raise the speed until a vortex climbs the tube wall without reaching the cap.
- Release the tube, or switch off in continuous mode, once the contents are evenly mixed.
