How the stirrer bar is used
Under the top plate of a magnetic stirrer, a drive turns a magnet or creates a rotating magnetic field. The stirrer bar in the vessel lines up with that field and spins with it, forming a vortex that keeps the liquid moving. Because nothing passes through the neck of the vessel, stirring can continue in a closed flask, under a condenser or during a titration, and the PTFE coating resists acids, alkalis and most solvents.
A 25 mm bar suits the everyday beakers and conical flasks used on the bench. The bar should be shorter than the base of the vessel so it can turn freely, and the speed is raised slowly so the bar does not lose the field and jump.
- Place the vessel centrally on the stirrer plate.
- Slide the bar gently down the side of the tilted vessel so it does not crack the glass.
- Start at low speed and increase gradually until a steady vortex forms.
- Recover the bar after use with a magnetic retriever or by pouring through a sieve, then rinse and dry it.
