How the swing out centrifuge is used
In a swing out (horizontal) rotor the buckets hang upright at rest and swing out to horizontal as the rotor speeds up. Sediment therefore travels straight down the length of the tube and settles as a flat, even layer at the bottom, and the boundary between layers stays level. That is why swing out heads are preferred for separating serum or plasma from whole blood, for urine sediment examination and for density-gradient work, where clean, flat layers matter.
Routine clinical protocols can be stored in the 9-program memory, and the rotor is identified automatically. The 9 acceleration and 10 braking settings let the user bring delicate samples up to speed and down again gently, so separated layers are not remixed when the rotor stops.
- Load balanced tubes into opposite buckets of the swing out rotor.
- Close the lid; it locks automatically.
- Select a stored program, or set speed, time, acceleration and brake.
- Start the run and read speed and time on the LCD display.
- Open the lid after the rotor stops and remove the tubes upright.
