How it is used
In a swing out head the tube holders hang vertically when the rotor is still and swing out to horizontal as it gathers speed. Each sample is spun along the full length of its tube, so the sediment settles as a flat layer at the bottom and the separated layers stay level. That is well suited to separating serum or plasma from blood, where the clear upper layer must be drawn off cleanly, and to concentrating urine sediment for microscopy.
The two models differ only in size. Model A carries four 15 ml tubes, 60 ml in all, and reaches 3700 rpm; Model B carries eight 15 ml tubes, 120 ml in all, and reaches 3500 rpm. Both are controlled by a simple 5-step regulator and draw little power, 0.11 or 0.13 kVA, so they run from an ordinary laboratory socket.
- Place tubes of equal weight in opposite holders of the swing out head.
- Close the lid and set the regulator to the first step.
- Switch on and step the regulator up to the speed required.
- Run for the time in the method, then turn the regulator back to zero.
- Wait for the head to stop before opening and removing the tubes upright.
