How it is used
Blood collected in a plain or anticoagulant tube separates when spun: the heavier red cells pack at the bottom, a thin buffy coat of white cells and platelets forms above them, and clear serum or plasma sits on top, ready to be pipetted off for biochemistry or serology. A clinical centrifuge does this in a few minutes at moderate force, and this model lets the user set the run directly in rpm or g-force, so a laboratory can follow the conditions written in its test method.
Settings can be changed after the rotor has reached speed, and a press-and-hold pulse key gives a quick spin. Gentle braking brings the rotor down smoothly so the separated layers are not disturbed, and the lid releases automatically at the end of the run so samples are not left warming in the chamber.
- Place balanced tubes opposite each other in the rotor: up to 12 of 10, 7 or 5 mL, or 8 of 15 mL.
- Close the lid, which locks during spinning.
- Set speed or RCF and run time, or HOLD for continuous running.
- Start the run and monitor rpm and g-force on the LCD.
- Remove the tubes when the lid releases and draw off the serum or plasma.
